By The 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sporting events on the South African calendar with a star-studded opening field and a dramatically enhanced Gary Player Country Club ready to welcome the world’s leading golfers.
Taking place from 3 to 6 December 2026 at Sun City the 44th edition of “Africa’s Major” will bring together an exciting mix of international stars a defending champion and some of golf’s most promising emerging talent.
The First Five Players
The opening group of players confirmed for the 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge includes:
- Justin Rose – England
- Bryson DeChambeau – United States
- Kristoffer Reitan – Norway
- Casey Jarvis – South Africa
- Marco Penge – England
Rose returns to Sun City with unfinished business after finishing runner-up at the tournament in 2007 while DeChambeau will make his Nedbank Golf Challenge debut.
Defending champion Reitan will return with the opportunity to become only the eighth player in the tournament’s history to successfully defend the title.
South African golf fans will also have plenty to look forward to with the inclusion of Casey Jarvis one of the country’s rising young stars, while Marco Penge returns for his second appearance following an impressive run on the DP World Tour.
A New Challenge at Gary Player Country Club
Adding another layer of intrigue to this year’s tournament is the extensive revamp of the Gary Player Country Club described by organisers as the most significant set of enhancements in the course’s history.
The most notable change is the introduction of an entirely new 470-metre par-four first hole. The hole has been built parallel to the original first but positioned higher along the lower reaches of the mountainside.
The original first-hole area has instead been transformed into a dedicated practice range giving the course a facility it has never previously had. A new practice putting and chipping green has also been added behind the practice range tees.
Other course enhancements include new professional tees on the third, sixth, eighth, 10th, 14th and 15th holes while greenside bunkers are being refurbished. New bunkering has also been introduced on the eighth 13th and 14th holes while the dam alongside the second hole has been enlarged.
The revamp also places greater emphasis on the spectator experience, with a new viewing area between the seventh and 12th greens and new walkways through the natural bushveld connecting the greens with the professional tees.
Strategic changes have also been made to several holes. Bush has been cleared around the fourth to open up views of the green and water hazard while the professional tee on the seventh has been pushed back by 25 metres. The right fairway bunker on the ninth has been removed to encourage more aggressive play, while further changes have been made around the 14th.
The result is a Gary Player Country Club that promises to test the world’s best while creating new viewing opportunities for spectators.
With international stars, emerging South African talent, a defending champion and a revitalised course all coming together the 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge is set to deliver a compelling chapter in the history of “Africa’s Major”.
